Horseback riding along the sandy shores of Amelia Island is one of the most unforgettable experiences our guests enjoy. The freedom of riding along the ocean, the sound of the waves, and the connection with these majestic animals is something truly special, and the new beach riding rules will help regulate that.
To keep this tradition alive while protecting our island’s natural beauty, Nassau County has passed new beach riding rules in Amelia Island. These changes are designed to protect endangered sea turtles during their nesting season and to make sure our beaches remain safe and enjoyable for all. Here’s everything you need to know before your next ride with us:
When You Can Ride
The biggest change involves the times horseback riding is allowed on the beach:
- Sea Turtle Nesting Season (May 1 – October 31)
Riding is permitted from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. only. - Off-Season (November 1 – April 30)
Riding hours are extended, will follow sunrise and sunset. (Example, November 1st first ride is 6:00 AM)
This means that during the summer and fall months, all riding must end by sunset to reduce disturbances for nesting turtles and hatchlings making their journey to the ocean
Conservation Zones & Nest Protections
To help safeguard our fragile beach ecosystem, additional new beach riding rules are now in place:
- A 10-foot Conservation Zone has been established along the dune line. No horses, vehicles, or parking are allowed in this area.
- Any identified turtle nests will be marked with clear signage and surrounded by a 10-foot buffer zone. Riders and horses must stay outside of these marked areas at all times.
- A new rut removal program will ensure that deep hoofprints or vehicle tracks are smoothed over, preventing obstacles for baby turtles trying to reach the ocean.
What This Means for Our Riders
At Amelia Island Horseback Riding, we fully support these new rules and are committed to doing our part to protect the island’s wildlife with new beach riding rules. When you book with us:
- We’ll guide you through the approved riding zones and times so you never have to worry about accidentally breaking the rules.
- Our team is trained to keep both horses and riders safely away from turtle nests and conservation areas.
- You can enjoy your ride knowing you’re helping to preserve one of Florida’s most cherished natural wonders.
Keeping Tradition Alive, Responsibly
These new beach riding rules strike a balance between protecting endangered sea turtles and preserving the joy of horseback riding on Amelia Island’s beaches. By riding responsibly, we ensure that future generations can enjoy both the sight of sea turtles nesting and the thrill of horseback riding by the ocean.
We’re proud to continue offering unforgettable riding experiences — now with the added peace of mind that our rides are eco-friendly and sustainable as a result of these new beach riding rules.
