What to Wear for Horseback Riding on the Beach in Amelia Island

Horseback riding along the beach is one of the most memorable ways to experience Amelia Island. Between the ocean breeze, wide stretches of sand, coastal scenery, and the experience of seeing the shoreline from horseback, a beach ride can quickly become one of the highlights of your trip.

If this is your first time riding a horse, or your first time riding on the beach, you may be wondering what you should wear.

At Amelia Island Horseback Riding, we welcome everyone from first-time riders to experienced equestrians. No previous horseback riding experience is required for our rides, and our guides are there to help make the experience comfortable and enjoyable. All of our rides begin at Peters Point Beachfront Park in Fernandina Beach.

We ride Western, so our horses are outfitted with Western saddles and tack. You do not need to own Western riding clothes or equipment to join us. Comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily is what matters most.

Choosing the right clothing before you arrive can help you feel more comfortable in the saddle and allow you to focus on enjoying your time along the beautiful Amelia Island coastline.

Long Pants Are Recommended, but Shorts Are Allowed

Even though you will be riding along a Florida beach, horseback riding is different from spending an afternoon swimming or relaxing in the sand.

We recommend wearing long pants because most guests find them more comfortable while riding. Long pants provide a layer between your legs and the saddle and can help reduce rubbing as the horse moves.

Jeans, lightweight riding pants, leggings, or other comfortable long pants can all work well. Florida temperatures can be warm, so breathable fabrics may be especially comfortable during daytime rides.

However, long pants are not required. Guests are welcome to wear shorts if that is what they prefer. Just keep in mind that your legs may have more direct contact with the saddle and tack, which some riders find less comfortable during the ride.

The best choice is clothing that allows you to move easily and helps you feel comfortable for approximately an hour in the saddle.

We Ride Western

All of our beach rides are done in Western tack, not English tack.

Western saddles are designed differently from English saddles and are commonly recognized by the saddle horn at the front. For many first-time riders, a Western saddle can provide a secure and comfortable riding experience.

You do not need cowboy boots, a Western shirt, or any special riding wardrobe to enjoy the experience. Our goal is for you to arrive dressed comfortably and ready to ride.

If you are purchasing or preparing photos for your trip, keep this in mind as well. The horses and riders at Amelia Island Horseback Riding should be represented in Western riding gear and Western saddles.

Wear Secure Shoes

Choose shoes that stay securely on your feet while mounting, riding, and dismounting.

Boots are a traditional Western riding choice, especially boots with a small heel, but visitors traveling to Amelia Island do not need to purchase special riding boots just for their beach ride.

A secure shoe that fits properly and will stay on your foot is a practical choice. Because every ride begins at Peters Point Beachfront Park, you should also remember that you will be around sand before and after the ride.

Choose footwear that you are comfortable wearing near the beach and do not mind getting a little sandy.

Dress for the Florida Weather

One of the things that makes horseback riding on Amelia Island special is that conditions can change depending on the time of day and season.

Our day rides take advantage of Amelia Island’s sunshine and mild temperatures throughout much of the year. The rides travel along the Atlantic coastline from Peters Point Beachfront Park.

For warmer rides, lightweight clothing and a breathable shirt can help you stay comfortable. If you prefer shorts during hot weather, you are welcome to wear them, although long pants are generally more comfortable against the saddle.

During cooler months or early in the morning, you may want to wear an additional light layer. A jacket or sweatshirt that fits comfortably without being excessively loose can help when the ocean breeze feels cooler.

Checking the weather before leaving for your ride is always a good idea.

What to Wear for a Daybreak Ride

Our Daybreak Rides offer a quiet early-morning experience along the beaches of Amelia Island. These rides begin during the early dawn when temperatures can feel cooler than they do later in the day, particularly when there is a breeze coming off the Atlantic.

For an early ride, consider wearing layers that can keep you comfortable before the sun has fully warmed the beach.

Comfortable pants or shorts, secure footwear, and a comfortable shirt are a good starting point. Depending on the season, adding a lightweight jacket or sweatshirt may make the beginning of your ride more enjoyable.

What to Wear for a Golden Hour Ride

Golden Hour Rides are among our most scenic experiences. They allow riders to travel along the beach as the colors of the sky begin to change toward the end of the day.

During warmer months, a lightweight breathable top may be ideal. During cooler parts of the year, bringing an extra layer can help as temperatures begin dropping near the end of the day.

Golden Hour is also a beautiful time for photographs, so you may want to choose clothing you feel good being photographed in.

Comfort should still come first. Choose something that allows you to sit and move comfortably in a Western saddle and enjoy the experience without constantly adjusting your clothing.

Avoid Extremely Loose or Flowing Clothing

A relaxed beach vacation may normally call for flowing dresses, loose scarves, oversized cover-ups, or similar clothing, but those items are not ideal for horseback riding.

Clothing that hangs loosely can become uncomfortable or distracting while riding. It may also move considerably in the ocean breeze.

Choose clothing that fits comfortably without restricting movement but is secure enough to stay in place throughout the ride.

The goal is simple: you should be able to sit comfortably, move naturally, and enjoy the experience.

What About Hats and Sunglasses?

Florida sunshine can be bright, especially along the open beach.

Sunglasses can make the ride more comfortable, but make sure they fit securely. If your sunglasses tend to slide easily, a strap may help keep them in place.

Hats require a little more consideration because wind along the beach can quickly turn a loose hat into a flying object.

If you choose to wear one, make sure it fits securely and does not interfere with any safety equipment.

Children under 15 are required to wear a protective helmet, which we supply. Adult riders who would like to wear a helmet can request one as well.

Sunscreen Is a Good Idea

Even when the temperature feels comfortable, Florida sun exposure can still be strong.

Because you will be riding along an open stretch of beach, applying sunscreen before arriving can help protect exposed areas such as your face, neck, arms, and legs, especially if you choose to ride in shorts.

Applying sunscreen before you arrive also means you will not need to worry about it immediately before mounting your horse.

If you are visiting Amelia Island on vacation, this is especially helpful because sun exposure from your other outdoor activities can add up quickly.

Come Ready to Ride

If you plan to spend time at the beach before your horseback ride, give yourself enough time to change out of wet swimwear and into comfortable riding clothes before meeting us.

You do not need to dress like an experienced equestrian. You do not need English riding gear, and you do not need special Western clothing.

We provide a Western horseback riding experience, and our riders can come dressed in comfortable clothing appropriate for the weather. Long pants are recommended because most guests find them more comfortable, but shorts are allowed.

You Do Not Need Riding Experience

First-time riders sometimes worry that they need special horseback riding clothes, equipment, or previous riding experience.

You do not.

No prior horseback riding experience is required for our beach rides. We welcome first-time, moderately experienced, and experienced riders.

Our guides will help you throughout the experience, and we even have a mounting step available for riders who need assistance getting onto the horse.

The most important thing is to come dressed comfortably and ready to enjoy the ride.

Dress Comfortably for Your Beach Ride

Comfort matters when you are spending time in the saddle.

Clothing that feels fine while standing for a few minutes may feel different after riding for an extended period. Make sure whatever you wear allows you to comfortably bend your knees, move your legs, and sit naturally in a Western saddle.

If you choose shorts, just remember that your legs will have more direct contact with the saddle and tack. That is why we recommend long pants even though we allow guests to wear shorts.

A simple, comfortable outfit usually makes for the best experience.

Bring Your Sense of Adventure

The best thing you can wear on an Amelia Island beach ride is something comfortable enough that you forget about your outfit once the ride begins.

From the moment you leave Peters Point Beachfront Park and reach the shoreline, the focus should be on the experience: the horses, the ocean, the sound of the waves, and the incredible coastal scenery.

Amelia Island Horseback Riding has been helping visitors and horse lovers experience horseback riding along Amelia Island’s beaches since 1993. Our rides are designed for a wide range of experience levels, including people getting on a horse for the very first time.
